Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so she could spend all daytime hours to reading, art as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to make use of the arts as a means of expression. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her family, she spent every summer with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspired her to write a movie about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received certificates in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of jurors. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move in publicity. DuVernay was brought in right after college, as the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also established a range of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
